Ashveen Jeetun is a chartered engineer with 17 years of experience working around the globe – notably in Mauritius, the Seychelles, and the UK.
Nowadays his talents are benefitting projects across the UAE, particularly at Terra the Sustainability Pavilion at Expo 2020, where Jeetun’s design for a SoDis (solar disinfection) system is making headlines.
The first non-residential use of the system will expose water to direct sunlight on the roof using PMMA transparent pipes.
The UV-a fraction of the solar spectrum will not directly affect the DNA in pathogens but it will cause the formation of reactive oxygen species, which will then damage the DNA.
In addition to the radiation, heat will also damage the molecular structure of pathogenic organisms by thermal inactivation or pasteurisation.
At temperatures above 45-50 degrees Celsius, a synergetic effect of thermal inactivation and UV-a radiation will occur which will enhance the inactivation rate of solar radiation.
This process results in disinfected water that is safe to drink.
