The global pumps market is a billion dollar industry. And according to a study, centrifugal pumps is the dominant segment in the market, while positive displacement pumps is the fastest growing segment. Asia-Pacific is the dominant region for water pumps, with majority demand from countries such as China and India. Strong volume sales of agricultural water pumps, which are offered by domestic manufacturers at lower price, are the key factor behind the flourishing market.

Pumps as a definition are mechanical devices used for the transportation of fluids. Water pumps market primarily includes centrifugal water pumps and positive displacement water pumps. Global water pumps market is advancing towards maturity, owing to growing market in developed countries.

The growing demand for water pumps is attributed to growth in agricultural and residential sectors, along with growth in end-use industries. Water and wastewater treatment (W&WWT) industry is the largest end user of water pumps and is anticipated to witness significant growth over the next five years.


Other application industries for water pumps include power, chemicals, and oil and gas industries, among others. Rapid industrialisation, increasing urbanisation, and rise in water and wastewater treatment service tariffs are also expected to drive growth in global water pumps market through 2020.

Wastewater management has become an issue of concern. Industrialisation and urbanisation have increased the demand for water, and the scarcity of freshwater has resulted in a shortage of optimum supply to fulfill the demand.

Population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation and water scarcity will continue to drive the pumps market, reiterates Gassan Mutwali, director of strategy and business development at Xylem.

Mutwali was talking to MEP Middle East about the pumps market outlook, particularly in the Middle East, in the year 2018.

He says: “The Middle East is a rapidly growing and diverse region with a large appetite for innovative water technology solutions. Fundamental drivers related to population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation and water scarcity will continue to drive investments in water infrastructure.

“We anticipate better market conditions driven by improving economic conditions and reform. Our optimism is also bolstered by knowing that regulations and end-users will continue to drive the need for pumps that are energy efficient and reliable, a space that Xylem is a world leader in.”

He elaborates that fact that the Middle East is in need for innovative solutions when it comes to water pumps. He adds: “This is especially important for a region that has around 5% of the world population but less than 1.5% of the world’s renewable freshwater resources.

“Energy efficiency continues to be a very important topic with increased attention from both consumers and regulators in order to make water management more sustainable. Given that much of the energy consumption is tied to water infrastructure and management, pumps play a critical role in delivering energy savings in the overall system, whether it is a building, industrial complex, or sewage treatment plant.

“Therefore, while there is a need to make more investment in water infrastructure; it is also of paramount importance to make investment in sustainable water technologies and pumps.”

Another trend gaining momentum in the market is the increasing adoption of intelligent pumps in GCC. The increasing focus on energy-efficient equipment and the rising awareness is influencing the adoption of intelligent pumps. Intelligent pumps have the capability to adjust the process changes in the pump systems and operate only when all the circumstances and conditions are checked to be safe.


Xylem’s portfolio combines products and solutions that enable smarter and more energy-efficient water management. This includes monitoring and control solutions, including for example Hydrovar, an intelligent pump controller that uses a monitoring system to match performance to demand, says Mutwali.

He says: “This way, it only consumes power on demand, potentially reducing energy expenses by as much as 70%; in many cases, it can help users qualify for energy savings incentives where they apply.

“We also recently launched the Flygt Concertor, which is the world’s first wastewater pumping system with integrated intelligence. The system senses the operating conditions of its environment, adapts its performance in real time and provides feedback to pumping station operators.”
