16. Anel Group, Rıdvan Çelikel, Founder and chairman
Since 1986, Turkey-based Anel Group has aimed to continually improve itself by undertaking electrical and mechanical contracting projects, which are comprehensive and require expertise in every aspect.
At Anel Group, engineers with 10 years or more of experience make up 60% of its workforce. The number of full-time staff currently working for the company is 4,065.
One of the major MEP project wins in 2017 was the Dubai Terminal Building I with a contract value of $20m.
Talking about training programmes at Anel, Rıdvan Çelikel, founder and chairman of the board, says: “We’ve been developing our e-learning platform, AnelAkademi, for the professional and personal development of our employees.”

17. Future Metro, Abdul Hamid Moukayed, Chairman
Future Metro generated a revenue of $47m by December 2016. The company’s total projected for the year 2017 is approximately $61m, and its full time employees are above 2,500.
Abdul Hamid Moukayed, chairman of Future Metro, says: “We will double our spending on workforce training as we move from cost-based to value-based training. Hence, our spending will be 2.5% of the project cost against 1.2% of the project value.”
One of Future Metro’s major MEP project wins in 2017 was The Royal Atlantis 2 that is located at The Palm Dubai, Dubai. The main contractor for this project is SsangYong - BESIX (a joint venture) and the client is Atlantis the Palm 2 developments. The lead consultant is WSP, and the duration of the project is about 24 months.
The project will have 795 guest rooms & suites and 231 serviced residences. In addition, the project will comprise 17 restaurants, bars and lounges and three beach-side villas.
Moukayed talks about some of the challenges: “According to the trend, low margin pricing is becoming an increasingly common situation. At the same time, contractors are looking at enhancing their revenue with the help of variations: either client-driven changes to the scope or technically derived changes due to construction or design issues. This may lead to conflicts during the delivery of projects and often manifest in the form of contractual claims for time and cost. “

18. Plafond, Dimitri Papakonstantinou, Managing director
Dubai-based Plafond, a fit out and MEP contractor, is part of the Emirates Airlines Group of companies. The company has extensive experience across several sectors from hospitality, F&B, airports to theme parks and medical. With over 1,486 full-time working staffs, the company recorded a revenue of $76m between 1 April 2016 and 31 March 2017. The company declared a 6% profit for the financial year 2016–2017.
When it comes to training initiatives, Dimitri Papakonstantinou, managing director, says: “We have a structured learning and development programme centred around employees’ personal and professional development that encompasses all levels within the organisation from skilled labour to senior management. The training program covers not only mandatory and specialised industry specific trainings such as those relating to safety standards but also provides a platform for benchmarking with best industry practices.”
Some of the completed projects by Plafond between April 2016 and May 2017 were Al Rayan complex in Sharjah that consists of two high-rise residential towers, one shell and core office tower and a mall. Its scope included the complete mechanical and plumbing works including the construction of the chiller plant. Another project was Double Tree by Hilton in Business Bay, where Plafond carried out the complete MEP works for the hotel.

19. Jumbo Engineering, Masood Raza, General manager
Jumbo Engineering is a multi-disciplined contracting company operating in the UAE. Since its establishment in 2002, the company has executed MEP projects in a wide range of industries and partnered with both public and private sectors on its projects.
The MEP division specialises in the execution of electro-mechanical works such as plumbing, electrical and fire fighting in residential and commercial buildings.
In an interview with Constuction Week magazine Masood Raza, the general manager of Jumbo Engineering Ltd (JEL), said: “[The business, during 2016,] was in consolidation and diversification mode, rather than driven by pure expansion.”
Masood went on to add: “Energy-efficient cooling solutions and automation have been added to JEL’s portfolio, in order to align with the shifting regional focus on energy-efficiency and sustainability.”
20. Elemec Electrical Contracting, Chandra Sekhar Reddy, Chief executive officer
Elemec Electrical Contracting claims to have performed exceptionally well in 2016, with revenues over $80m. V.S. Chandra Sekhar Reddy, chief executive officer (GCC & India), has been leading the company for the past three years.
Talking about the year 2017, Reddy says that it has been a year of consolidation for Elemec. He says: “Taking necessary corrective actions on the short comings has been an objective for the year 2016 and to date has been the prime focus. We have started to see the positive signs and it is a good thing for Elemec to invest its expertise more diligently and maximise the returns to its client, in the form of deliverables.
“The market is certainly feeling the dearth in qualified MEP companies and Elemec sees this as the single biggest opportunity to position itself as a reliable MEP company.”
