SEMCO picked up the award for Plumbing Project of the Year for the Sila Community Hospital project in Abu Dhabi.
Ten separate buildings are included on this project. The main hospital building consists of two three-storey and two one-storey buildings interconnected to each other.
The work formed part of an overall 2030 masterplan for the Al Gharbia region (Sila being one of seven settlements) that is currently under review by Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) in coordination with the Western Region Development Council (WRDC) and Western Region Municipality (WRM).
Judges said the project will return great value to the Western Region, with the plumbing package delivered within time and budget and providing efficiency savings for the client.
Subhash Pritmani, vice president of SEMCO and Michael Knowles, project manager at SEMCO received the award.
Knowles said SEMCO’s work on the project is particularly impressive when hospitals’ high volume of plumbing requirements is considered.
He said: “Hospitals can be complex, but as engineers you tend to always be planning and that helped us get together as a team and execute this project.”
The hospital has been developed to the Estidama Pearl 2 rating.
“Good engineering comes from the team on the ground,” Knowles said, adding a bottom-top approach is a beneficial construction practice.
“As managers or designers we know the scope of the project and must drive the team to achieve it, but targets are met by the guys who wake up at 4am and make it all happen on-site. This award is for them as well.”
