Dubai Electricity and Water Authority's (DEWA) Shams Dubai initiative allows customers to install photovoltaic (PV) panels on their rooftops to generate electricity from solar power, and connect the systems to DEWA’s grid.
The electricity is used onsite and the surplus is exported to DEWA’s grid.
Shams Dubai was started in August 2015.
Balamurugan Dakshinamurthy, solar specialist at DEWA, told MEP Middle East on the sidelines of WETEX that the authority had connected about 225 projects, with around 135 at the no objection cerificate (NOC) stage.
He said that the average payback time for installing PV panels was between five to seven years, depending on the components chosen and structural requirements.
